About the national e-infrastructure

A rich ecosystem connected through the grid

The Netherlands high-end computing environment for research encompasses the following physical elements:

• National supercomputer
  (Presently SGI 3800+SGI Altix 3700, to be replaced by HUYGENS)
• National cluster
• National data storage area (Almere)
• CAVE immersive visualisation resource
• IBM Blue Gene for LOFAR, University of Groningen)
• SURFnet-6 (provided by SURFnet)

NCF is formal project owner of a collaborative grid project called BIGGRID, together with NIKHEF and NBIC. This project aims to establish a single advanced grid-environment for use by all disciplines. It includes the establishment of a Tier-1 centre within CERN’s Tier-concept (mainly storage and compute capacity) and organisational matters, such as user boards, national helpdesk, etc.
